Sea Scout Ship 2020 was first chartered in May 2020. We adopted the name "Hindsight". Ship 2020 is a member of the White Buffalo District of Quivira Council, Central Region, Scouts BSA. We are chartered to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kansas. Our Ship is comprised of young men and women seeking opportunities for adventure, training, community, service, responsibility, and recognition on both water and land. Members of Ship 2020 can expect to participate in many outdoor activities such as sailing, paddling, camping, and shooting; all while learning real-life skills including leadership, self-confidence, communications, first-aid, safety, and seamanship.
Sea Scouts was founded in America in 1912 by Arthur A. Carey. Soon afterwards, the Secretary of the Navy encouraged the development of Sea Scouting and extended the cooperation of the Navy Department. In 1927, Commander Thomas J. Keane was appointed to be the National Director of Sea Scouting. Under his leadership, the program grew extensively. In the 1940s, Sea Scouting served its country well in World War II. Commander Keane was recalled to active service in the Navy and resigned his position as national director of Sea Scouting. Thousands upon thousands of former and active Sea Scouts joined the Navy and made a tremendous impression on Admiral Chester Nimitz, who sincerely believed that Sea Scouts were better trained and better equipped to help the Navy win out over the enemy and the elements. Today, Sea Scouting continues to provide a strong program for the training and leadership formation of young men and women as they grow to become responsible, prepared adults.
When its too cold to be on the water, We hold regular ship meetings on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on North Waco Avenue. During sailing season, the majority of our on-the-water events occur at the Ninnescah Sailing Association at Cheney Lake.
